Short answer: 21AA gravel is the all-around standard: it packs hard, drains well, and grades back easily, which is why road commissions use it. Crushed asphalt binds down into a nearly solid surface that resists dust and washboard, making it the pick for slopes and high-traffic drives. Crushed concrete is the budget workhorse, best as a base or on utility drives. Delivered prices vary with the pit and the haul, so the real comparison is a quote for your address, which is free.
Ask three neighbors what to put on a driveway around here and you will get all three of these answers. None of them is wrong; each material is the right choice for a different driveway. Here is how they actually compare when you run equipment over all three for a living.
First, what the names mean
21AA is a Michigan spec for dense-graded crushed limestone or gravel: a controlled mix of stone sizes down to fines, engineered so it locks together when compacted. Crushed asphalt, also called asphalt millings, is old pavement ground into gravel-sized pieces that still carry their binder. Crushed concrete is demolished concrete crushed and screened to gravel gradations. The second two are recycled materials, which is where their price advantage comes from.
21AA gravel: the standard
There is a reason 21AA is the default answer. The graded mix compacts into a dense, firm surface that sheds water when properly crowned, handles frost cycles well, and regrades beautifully: run a blade over a tired 21AA drive and it comes back like new. It is widely available from pits across northern Michigan, which keeps delivered prices sane.
Its honest weaknesses: it can dust in dry weather, it will washboard on grades and hard corners under enough traffic, and loose stone migrates into the lawn at the edges. Crushed asphalt: the almost-pavement
Crushed asphalt is the interesting one. The old binder in the millings softens in summer heat and compaction, and the surface gradually knits together into something closer to a rough paved drive than a gravel one. That earns it real advantages: very little dust, strong resistance to washboard and rutting, and excellent performance on slopes where loose gravel wants to migrate downhill. Plowing is easier too, since there is less loose material to peel up.
The trade-offs: supply is inconsistent because it depends on what is being torn up nearby, so price and quality both swing more than 21AA. It wants a proper compacted base underneath, and it is a commitment: once bound down, you do not casually regrade it the way you would gravel. On the right drive it is excellent; it is just not the answer everywhere.
Crushed concrete: the budget workhorse
Crushed concrete usually comes in at the lowest delivered price of the three, and as a base material it is genuinely good: it compacts tight, and residual cement fines help it bind. For a barn lane, an equipment yard, or the base course under a nicer topping, it is hard to beat on value.
As a finished surface on a home driveway it is more utilitarian: the color is pale and patchy, quality varies with the source, and poorly screened loads can carry wire or brick flecks, so buying from a reputable pit matters. Our usual advice: crushed concrete for the base, something better looking on top.
The lake-cottage finish: limestone
One more material deserves a mention because everyone asks about it. The bright white stone on cottage drives around the lakes is crushed limestone, laid as a topping over a packed base. It is a looks-first choice and a good one, but it is a finish layer, not a structure. The drive underneath still has to be built right, a point we make at length in our driveway cost guide.
You can mix and match
Nothing says a driveway has to be one material top to bottom, and the best-value builds usually are not. A common combination around here: crushed concrete or a sand-gravel mix as the compacted base, 21AA or crushed asphalt as the running surface, and limestone only where it shows. You put the cheap strength where nobody sees it and the good looks where everybody does. The layers have to be compacted properly and graded to work together, which is machine work, but the material bill drops noticeably compared to building the whole depth out of the surface stone.
Picking for your driveway
- Flat drive, normal traffic, want easy maintenance: 21AA.
- Slope, heavy use, or dust you are sick of: crushed asphalt.
- Base course, barn lane, or tightest budget: crushed concrete.
- Curb appeal at the cottage: limestone topping over a proper base.
And the rule that outranks all of the above: the material is only as good as the base and drainage under it. A perfect stone on a bad base becomes a bad driveway with nicer ingredients.
