Step two: the permit

One honest scheduling note: the permit and evaluation phase usually takes longer than the excavation. If your build has a deadline, start the septic process early, because the digging is measured in days and the paperwork is not always.
Step three: the installation
Installation day is where all that preparation pays off. The tank gets set level on a proper base, the field gets laid out on grade exactly as the permit specifies, and the lines, stone, and distribution box go in to spec. On a well-drained site with the permit settled, a typical residential install is a matter of days, weather permitting.
Step four: inspection, then backfill
The health department inspects the open system before it gets covered. This ordering matters: an inspector has to see the tank, the field, and the connections as built, so nothing gets buried until the sign-off happens. Then the system is backfilled, the ground is graded out, and your yard starts looking like a yard again instead of a dig site. From that point, the whole arrangement lives quietly underground for decades, asking only for regular tank pumping.
What it costs, honestly
Published Michigan figures for a complete new residential system, tank and field and installation, mostly run from around eight thousand dollars into the low twenties. What moves a project inside that range:
- Soil. Fast-draining sand supports a conventional field; slow soil or high water pushes toward engineered systems that cost more.
- System size. More bedrooms means a bigger tank and field.
- Site access. Tight waterfront lots and wooded parcels take more careful work than open ground.
- Replacement vs. new. Replacing a failed system can involve removing or abandoning the old components properly.
Treat every one of those numbers as orientation, not a quote. Sites vary too much for anything else to be honest, and a written free estimate is the only number worth planning around.
Living with the system afterward
Once installed, a septic system asks very little: pump the tank on a regular schedule, keep vehicles and buildings off the drain field, keep roof and surface water pointed away from it, and be sensible about what goes down the drain. Treated that way, the system disappears from your life for decades, which is exactly what it is for.
